Job Description

Summary:

The Middle and High School Performing Arts Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging performing arts instruction that supports students at varying levels of experience and ability.

Depending on the teacher’s background and the needs of the school, courses may include instrumental music, band, vocal music, musical theater, drama, performance, or other related performing arts offerings.

This teacher will also help coordinate student performances, concerts, productions, chapel participation, and other school events. Working collaboratively with school leadership, faculty, families, and outside partners, the Performing Arts Teacher will help strengthen and grow the school’s performing arts program.

Primary Responsibilities

Classroom Instruction

  • Teach performing arts courses to middle and high school students.
  • Develop engaging, age-appropriate lessons that build students’ performance skills, creativity, confidence, discipline, and appreciation for the arts.
  • Provide instruction to students with varying levels of experience and ability.
  • Teach foundational skills such as technique, rehearsal practices, performance preparation, collaboration, and stage presence.
  • Incorporate music theory, performance history, artistic interpretation, and other relevant academic content as appropriate.
  • Establish clear learning objectives and assess student progress through rehearsals, performances, projects, written work, and classroom participation.
  • Provide timely and meaningful feedback that encourages student growth.
  • Maintain a positive, organized, and Christ-centered classroom culture that promotes respect, responsibility, creativity, and teamwork.
  • Develop and maintain course curriculum, lesson plans, grades, and student records in accordance with school expectations.

Performing Arts Program Development

  • Help develop and strengthen performing arts opportunities for middle and high school students.
  • Plan and lead concerts, showcases, productions, assemblies, chapel performances, and other student performance opportunities.
  • Assist with the development or expansion of an instrumental or band program, when aligned with the teacher’s experience.
  • Select appropriate music, scripts, performance materials, and curriculum that support the school’s mission and educational goals.
  • Encourage student participation in performing arts programs and help students identify areas where they can develop their gifts.
  • Create opportunities for beginning and experienced students to participate meaningfully.
  • Recommend equipment, instruments, music, technology, and instructional materials needed to support the program.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of instruments, costumes, equipment, scripts, music, and other program materials.
  • Ensure that all performances, materials, and program activities are appropriate for a Christian school environment.

Rehearsals and Performances

  • Schedule and lead rehearsals during the school day and, when necessary, before or after school.
  • Prepare students to perform with confidence, professionalism, and respect for one another.
  • Coordinate performance logistics, including schedules, staging, sound, lighting, equipment, costumes, transportation, and communication with families.
  • Collaborate with school staff to support performances connected to chapel, special events, graduations, open houses, and other school activities.
  • Supervise students appropriately during rehearsals, performances, trips, and school events.
  • Communicate performance expectations, rehearsal schedules, and event details clearly and in advance.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborate with the Middle and High School Principal, administration, faculty, and staff to support the school’s performing arts program.
  • Partner with chapel leaders, worship teams, event coordinators, and other departments when performances support school-wide programs.
  • Communicate regularly with students and families regarding classroom expectations, rehearsals, performances, and student progress.
  • Work with Educational Support Services and school leadership to provide appropriate accommodations and instructional support.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, department meetings, and school-wide planning.
  • Develop positive relationships with local artists, instructors, churches, community organizations, and other potential program partners when appropriate.

Student Development

  • Build meaningful relationships that support students’ academic, artistic, social, and spiritual growth.
  • Encourage students to develop perseverance, confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and creative expression.
  • Help students recognize and pursue their God-given gifts and abilities.
  • Provide a safe environment where students feel comfortable learning, performing, making mistakes, and improving.
  • Support students in developing healthy rehearsal habits, time-management skills, and personal accountability.
  • Serve as a positive Christian role model who reflects the mission and values of Brave Christian Schools.
  • Participate in chapel services, faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and student activities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • California teaching credential or the ability to obtain one.
  • Experience teaching middle school or high school students.
  • Knowledge of performing arts instruction, curriculum development, rehearsal techniques, and student assessment.
  • Ability to effectively manage a classroom and provide instruction to students with different skill levels.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate performances, rehearsals, and school events.
  • Demonstrated Christian faith consistent with the mission and Statement of Faith of Brave Christian Schools.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Music Education, Performing Arts, Theater Arts, Music, Education, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching instrumental music, vocal music, drama, musical theater, or another performing arts discipline.
  • Experience developing, teaching, or directing a middle or high school band program.
  • Experience directing concerts, theatrical productions, musicals, showcases, or other student performances.
  • Ability to play and teach one or more musical instruments.
  • Familiarity with sound equipment, lighting, staging, music technology, or performance production.
  • Experience working in a Christian school, private school, or college-preparatory environment.
  • Experience building or expanding a performing arts program.
